Gennaro GATTUSO
First Team Coach

Image

Throughout his career, Gattuso mainly played as a central or defensive midfielder, although he was deployed on the right flank on occasion, either as a full-back, or as a winger, due to his versatility. Despite not being particularly skilful from a technical standpoint, Gattuso was a strong, consistent, aggressive, and hard-tackling midfielder, with an extremely high work rate; he also possessed a powerful shot, and quick reactions, as well as an excellent positional sense and good anticipation, which enabled him to excel in this position; in his prime, he was widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. His energetic and combative box-to-box style of play, as well as his pace, tactical awareness and abilities as a ball-winner, allowed him to form a successful midfield partnership with playmaker Andrea Pirlo throughout his career, both at club and international level. Gattuso's deeper position on the pitch allowed him to support Pirlo and his other team-mates defensively by breaking up the opposition's attacks; he often only advanced in order to intercept the ball and play it to one of his more creative or offensive team-mates after winning back possession, subsequently returning to his more defensive midfield role. His tenacity on the pitch, exemplified by his fierce challenges and stamina, earned him the nickname Ringhio (Snarl). In addition to his footballing abilities, he also stood out for his competitive spirit and his leadership.

AC Milan legend Rino Gattuso has sung the praises of Italy coach Antonio Conte.

Conte oversaw Italy's opening Euros win over Belgium.

“Italy have proven time and again that they bring out their best in the most difficult moments," Gattuso told L'Equipe. “There are talented players in the squad like [Lorenzo] Insigne and [Daniele] De Rossi. Conte is a great Coach, one of the best in the world.

"They used to say the same things to us in 2006, that we were an old national team, that we had generational trouble. We love hearing this kind of polemic.

“Thiago Motta is a great player. We lack a poacher, but that way of playing is obsolete. You can see that there are many teams who play with a false nine."

Gennaro Gattuso confirmed he will take the job of Primavera youth team Coach. “I wouldn’t have done it for anyone but Milan.”

This could be considered a step down for the 39-year-old, who has been first team Coach at FC Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa.

“I wouldn’t have done it for any other destination, but Milan is Milan,” Gattuso told La Repubblica online.

In July he will take over as the Coach of the Rossoneri Primavera youth team.

Rino spent most of his career at San Siro from 1999 to 2012.

Previous Primavera tacticians in recent years include Pippo Inzaghi and Cristian Brocchi.

It's official now

Good luck Rino. Hopefully he'll be able to develop the kids in peace and be somewhat of a locker room enforcer.

Gattuso: "While I was meeting with Mirabelli for the coaching job, I got into a fight with some reporters and threw my cell phone against the wall. Fassone wanted me to sign the contract right away but I wanted to do it at home, in Milan."
