MONTELLA: "THIS IS NOT ENOUGH AND WE KNOW IT"

The boss had his say to Milan TV. Borini and Montolivo too commented on the match: "We need more steel in the team"

Interviewed by Milan TV at the Spyros Louis Stadium in Athens, coach Vincenzo Montella reflected on the 0-0 against AEK.

THE MATCH
"The teams deserved to draw, they did create a bit more in the first half while our tempo was too low. We did better in the second half and we went close to scoring. The boys fought. We have to do more and we know it. They didn't give us much space man-marking us.

ON THE INDIVIDUALS
"We know that our men can do more, they are young talents with a great future lying ahead of them. For those who came from foreign leagues, it's not easy to adapt to the Italian style of football. Bonucci and Montolivo played a good game, with great character.

DESIRE TO WIN
"We really haven't got much time to prepare for the next Serie A match but we want to win. There's really great desire to take home a positive result, for our position in the table and for the management".

It was Fabio Borini to comment on the game after the final whistle, in his interview to Milan TV:
"It was not easy to play here. AEK defended well, repeating the game they played at San Siro making hard for us to break-through. I look at the positive side: we took home a point, we are top of the group and conceded no goals. We really tried to seal qualification tonight". On his role: "I have learnt to play as winger. I try to give it all, in every aspect. I give everything for this team". Mind goes to the league, now: "The three points, this is the only thing we have in mind. We have a deep squad and it's normal that the coach rotates the players. We only have to adapt to the opponents we face".

Lastly, Riccardo Montolivo had his say addressing the media: "I lacked a bit of self-confidence as I hadn't played in a while, but I'm pleased enough with my performance. I'm disappointed with the draw, we weren't up to the task in the first half: we should have done more and we need to show more character. We played better in the second half and we deserved to score but we have to do more". On the team's mentality: "We have to improve on this aspect, we played too many long balls while we should have moved the ball around more quickly and with more confidence". Up next, Sassuolo: "Sunday's match has become a really important one. Sometimes matches can be won through the confidence that you can score the winning goal at any moment. We need 'dirty' wins too, but luck doesn't come from the sky".

Bonucci: 'Milan lack character'

Leonardo Bonucci supported Milan Coach Vincenzo Montella, but feels the Rossoneri lack “character and confidence.”

It was another dire 0-0 result against AEK Athens in the Europa League, mirroring the San Siro stalemate.

“The two games against AEK were strange, as they were often man-marking us and tried to crowd us out everywhere except in defence,” the defender told Sky Sport Italia.

“We knew it would be difficult, but we picked up a good point and will now focus on the game with Sassuolo. We want to get back on track in Serie A.”

It was Bonucci’s comeback game after sitting out a two-match Serie A ban for elbowing Genoa defender Aleandro Rosi.

“I’ve worked well during these two weeks out, making important steps forward both physically and psychologically. I had to tune out a little bit after everything that happened since July 14, but I still need to grow. I am pleased with tonight’s performance, though.”

The former Juventus star stood up for under-fire Montella, who risks the sack if he doesn’t beat Sassuolo on Sunday.

“We are the ones who step on to the field, it’s not just the ideas of the Coach. We need to get results to bring back the enthusiasm we had this summer.

“I see a lot of quality in this squad, but we lack a little bit of character and confidence to take more responsibility when the ball is at our feet.”

Bonucci arrived for the post-match interviews with a large cut to his lip.

“Some studs caught me during the final move, but it’s all part of the game.”
