GATTUSO: "NO MISTAKES ALLOWED AT BENEVENTO"
The coach in press conference ahead of the away clash against the Giallorossi: “It’s going to be a battle”
Gennaro Gattuso and De Zerbi know each other very well. Back in summer 2016, they played a crucial playoff match for league promotion in which the current Red and Black coach managed to guide his former club Pisa forward in Serie B. On Sunday at 12.30 PM, Rino will face his ex-opponent once again, this time on his debut as AC Milan first-team coach. Ahead of the match against Benevento, the boss introduced the away clash in a press conference held at Milanello. These were his words:
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS AS FIRST-TEAM COACH
"I would like to thank the boys for their positive attitude and disposition. I am very pleased with the work done this week. It is not a secret that I like to see intensity and hard work. We are trying new things, but the 3-man defence remains and we will keep working on it. I feel comfortable. From day one in training, I felt good with this team. As days go by I realise how difficult it is to manage 24, 25 players. This is my biggest concern because I would like to involve everyone. For the rest, I have no worries.
"It’s going to be a battle. We must not be fooled by their current position in the league. It is true they have won 0 points but with coach De Zerbi things have changed, now they are more dangerous and have a stronger mentality. We cannot afford to make mistakes in this match.
"My way of working is totally different from Vincenzo’s (Montella). I noticed the boys were struggling a bit but it does not mean that it is all the previous coach’s fault. We have to improve many aspects of our game, be mentally stronger and increase our intensity. A more Italian AC Milan? I don't know. Those who perform better and work harder will play in my team. I don't pay attention if the player is Italian or not, I need everyone. This week, for instance, they made it difficult for me to make choices.
ON THE INDIVIDUALS
“I don’t like to talk only on the individuals. Lucas Biglia is a player who needs to be physically good in order to shine. He hasn't been at his top the last weeks but still showed great disposition. We had a chat and he is important for us, although he has to improve his condition. Can Kalinic play on the side like Mandzukic? Maybe, that would give us new tactical solutions but today it seems difficult for me to ask him that. The only one who I could think of at the moment is Cutrone due to his acceleration and intensity. For the moment, Kalinic will continue to play up front.
"Every coach I played with tough me a lot, even those with whom I did not win. Among them, I can name Ancelotti, Sacchi and Capello. I only hope to do well, to work hard and get positive results".https://www.acmilan.com/en/news/intervi ... -benevento
